We live in the #VUCA time – very volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous times. These times are having a profound effect upon the wellbeing of employees across all sectors and it needs to be viewed as a key driver of business performance. In Taipei,China, a survey reported that over 60% of salaried employees worry about health issues stemming from #overwork, while 75% of them have considered quitting their jobs because of work-related exhaustion. Organisations with high levels of employee wellbeing have outperformed the market by 2 -3% over a 25 year period (Prof Alex Edmans, London Business School, 2015). Employee wellbeing is a secret weapon for companies looking to gain a competitive advantage. Engaged employees are happy employees. They are highly involved in and enthusiastic about their work and workplace. They are psychological “owners,” driving performance and innovation, and moving their organization forward. Conversely, if employees are struggling or suffering, this attitude negatively affects the overall workplace environment and the team. This should not be a surprise, as we all know what it is like to work with people who are highly energized. Energy should be seen as important as skills, knowledge, behaviours and experience in driving the performance of people.
