In today’s episode of #TheDigitalDiplomat with Tony Abad, we are joined by Goodie Okechukwu, the founder of Protect Accent, which advocates for people’s empowerment regardless of their accents.
If you haven’t encountered what accent bias is, watch this video to find out! They talked about how accent bias affects someone’s personal and work life. Goodie mentions that the statistics show that 89% of employers had made discriminatory employment decisions based on accents.
The hierarchy of accents is also evident, especially in international settings, where some accents are more preferred than others. To combat this, Goodie reminds us that we have to pre-check our own biases to have a better mindset with regard to diverse accents for us to be able to do a successful cross-cultural communication.
