Can you unlearn unconscious bias?
#UnconsciousBias, as defined by UCSF Office of Diversity and Outreach, “are social stereotypes about certain groups of people that individuals form outside their own conscious awareness.” This can affect the life cycle of employment, especially when leaders make decisions based on unconscious bias.
Sunaina Vij, Founder of The Bridge, Interculturalist and EDI speaker of #TCPGrowth, emphasizes that unlearning conscious bias is not easy because it is automatic, intentional, ingrained and influences behavior.
She explains that raising awareness is not enough to combat unconscious bias, but giving the appropriate tools such as behavioral intention and empathetic perspective taking techniques may help lessen it.
